In-case you’re wondering, the roundhouse got its name because of its large triangular nature.
This magnificent hexagonal beast is located at the top of St James’ street and is actually part of Nottingham’s old general hospital, hence the trapezium shaped nature, synonymous with UK hospitals at the time.
This is a great pub actually, and due to its location one of the best ways to kick off a pub crawl, it’s easy to float down into the heart of the city centre as it’s pretty much all down hill, much like your night likely will be.
The bar is well stocked with a good selection of Ales which change frequently, The Roundhouse have a deal in place with the Full Mash brewery, they brew an exclusive Ale Roundhouse Gold (4%) and sell it at £2 a pint, it’s worth visiting the pub for this beer alone.
Because of its previous usage and the fact that they sell food (which is a popular choice) the roundhouse has a lot more comfortable seating than an average pub as well as benches in a courtyard at the rear for the summer, or winter if you’re a smoker.
The Roundhouse is a characteristic pub with a warm friendly atmosphere and offer a lot more to drink that just ale, it’s well worth a visit, so if you haven’t do so.

Initially I assumed that the author of this review was utilising sarcasm when saying that the Roundhouse got its name from its ‘triangular nature’ in some tongue-in-cheek manner.
However, once I’d read the next paragraph which described the building as a ‘hexagonal beast’ (note: a hexagon is a shape with 6 sides) and its ‘trapezium shaped nature’ (a trapezium being a quadrilateral with two parallel sides), I have just come to the conclusion that too much Full Mash beer has been consumed and that the author is just thoroughly confused and could do with some refresher maths lessons!
Despite this, I echo their sentiment in that the Roundhouse does do a mighty good pint and the food is darned excellent. The pub has heaps of character with it’s unique design which has been sensitively decorated in a way which also gives out very much an old-style pub feel and the staff (I’ve spotted some ex-Beeston Vic staff behind the bar) are very knowledgable about their trade.
Rolo, it was firmly tongue in cheek daftness, I would have hated to have kept saying triangular so just kept thinking of shapes 🙂
Though I will point out I doubt a refresher in mathematics will help me much, I got an E grade, not once, but twice! ‘skills’
I was in there last weekend, though the roundhouse gold had sold out, good job the ever excellent 99 red baboons by Blue Monkey was on 🙂
